Historic Center of Puebla
Visit Puebla, one of the cities with a great gastronomic tradition, tourist attractions of all kinds, and full of life wherever you go.
What to visit in Puebla
There are various tourist attractions or must-see tours in Puebla, depending on how many days you have to visit the city. The historic center has been a World Heritage Site by UNESCO since 1987, so this area should be at the top of your must-see list.
You should also visit La Iglesia del Rosario, which pays tribute to the Virgin of the Rosary. This church dates back to the 17th century and is mainly known for the gold sheets that cover its chapel, a fact that earned it the title of The Golden House.
Here you will find the Cathedral, a religious building made of red bricks, with a dome, and filled with oil paintings and chapels inside. Continue your tour to the city’s main square, also known as El Zócalo, a lively and very representative area of Puebla.
Biblioteca Palafoxiana
The Palafoxiana Library dates back to the 17th century and is one of the most important in the country. If you’ve heard of it, you should know that it can be visited from Tuesday to Thursday and from Friday to Sunday during morning hours from 10:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. and from 10:00 a.m. to 6:00 p.m., respectively.
The entrance fee is $42, although on Tuesdays and Sundays, admission is free. For children under 12, students, teachers, or people with disabilities, the entrance price is reduced by half.
The Palafoxiana Library is known for being the first public library in the Americas and, therefore, one of the oldest libraries on the continent. It was founded by Bishop Juan de Palafox y Mendoza.
Since 1981, it has been a Historical Monument of Mexico, and in 2005, it entered UNESCO’s Memory of the World Programme, thanks to its significant bibliographic collection.
Inside, you can find large wooden bookshelves that reach the ceiling, all filled with books and encyclopedias from different eras. In the center, transparent display cases exhibit more volumes of great importance, as well as antique tables and chairs, among other details.
Puebla’s House of Culture
Puebla’s House of Culture is located in the historic center of the city. It was founded in 1974 and consists of several rooms, in addition to the Palafoxiana Library. You will find two multipurpose rooms set up for events, as well as three rooms where temporary exhibitions are organized.
It can be accessed from Monday to Friday from 9:00 a.m. to 8:00 p.m. The best part is that it hosts various cultural activities that will not leave you indifferent.
For example, conferences are usually held, films are screened, plays are organized, plastic arts exhibitions, or book presentations by different authors. If you like it, don’t miss the opportunity to learn more on their social networks.
