Tego Calderon – Saturday 22 July
Puerto Rican rapper Tego Calderon ends this year’s festival on Saturday 22 July. Calderon released his first album El Abayarde in 2002 and despite the fact that reggaeton was considered an underground genre at the time, the album sold 50,000 copies on its release, setting a sales record for a reggaeton album. In the summer of 2005, Calderon signed a deal between Atlantic Records and his own independent label, Jiggiri Records, making him the first reggaeton artist to have a deal with a major record company. One of the pioneers of the genre, Calderon has helped steer his country’s dominant youth culture out of Puerto Rico and Latino neighbourhoods, and into the American stream of pop consciousness. The rapper has also featured in three of the Fast & Furious movies.
