It is important to know that there are 4 categories to classify the decline and risk of disappearance of species, which are: E (probably extinct in the wild), P (endangered), A (threatened) and PR (subject to special protection).

Animals endemic to Mexico

According to official Mexican government data, there are currently 535 endangered species in Mexico and 912 threatened species.

We have made two small lists representative of the situation due to the large number of species; firstly, one listing endangered species in Mexico:

  3. Golden Tlacuahe
  4. Gray
  5. Southern flying squirrel
  6. Yaguarundi
  7. Yellow-throated long-eared bats
  8. Sword-nosed bat
  9. Southern shrew
  10. Northern elephant seal
  11. Northern desert shrew
  12. Topo pata ancha
  13. Arizona squirrel
  14. Gray squirrel
  15. Dark shrew

And a second list of endangered species in Mexico:

Within this large number of species, perhaps the most representative or the ones that the general population has heard the most about are the salamanders, the jaguar, the Mexican wolf, the black bear, the vaquita, the scarlet macaw, the tapir or the cozumel raccoon.

Thanks to the data that can be found on the Mexican government’s biodiversity page, it has been possible to learn that there are currently 48 species believed to be extinct in Mexico. We have left a short list of 15 species, but the complete list can be found at the following link.
