Activities to do in Isla Mujeres

There aren’t as many tourists as in the city center, and you can do a wide variety of activities.

These include swimming with dolphins, undoubtedly one of the most intelligent animals in the animal kingdom, or learning about the longest-lived animal, the turtle. For snorkeling, scuba diving, and sea lovers in general, the best dives are available, as the waters are shallow and home to a variety of flora and fauna. We can visit several locations, such as Garrafon Park, the Underwater Art Museum, the Manchones Reef, and the Cave of the Sleeping Sharks.

Tortugranja

Between May and September, turtles come to the coast to lay their eggs in safe areas to keep them safe. When the turtles hatch, the island’s young inhabitants learn in local schools how to carry them to the sea, their true home. The initiative is called ” Tortugranja, a turtle farm where tourists also learn about the life of this fascinating oviparous animal.

Garrafon Park

Although we’ve mentioned that this is a place for scuba diving, snorkeling, and diving in its spectacular coral reef, this national park also offers sports activities such as hiking and kayaking. It’s located 6 km from the center, in the south of the island.

Underwater Art Museum

Also known as MUSA, this combative initiative, launched in 2009, highlights the deterioration of the seabed and its habitat. To this end, hundreds of life-size sculptures of people were created, which can be found at the bottom of the Caribbean Sea. It is one of the most famous and visited underwater attractions in the world.

El Arrecife Manchones

It’s about 15 meters deep, making it very attractive for both experienced divers and beginners. It stretches for 2 kilometers, offering a wide variety of marine life in its warm waters. To access it, you need a boat; it’s 8 kilometers from the Isla Mujeres dock.

The cave of the sleeping sharks

Who hasn’t been scared when seeing or hearing about the mighty shark? Just 30 minutes away by boat, you can find a cave inhabited by this animal.

There, you can find sharks completely asleep, but with the unique ability to see clearly. They spend hours and hours motionless, making the diving experience pure adrenaline.

Finally, we’ll tell you the origin of this beautiful island’s name: in this Mayan territory, the moon goddess Ixchel was worshipped, and female figures and sculptures were created to place offerings. When the Spanish conquistadors arrived in 1517, they were captivated by these monuments, and thus named it Isla Mujeres.
