Aztec Gods

Thanks to the information extracted from the book ”La religión mexica” by Rafael Tena, we can get an idea of the vast complexity of the Mexica religion, which was polytheistic, since they worshipped many deities.

First we will talk about the founding gods, Tonacatecutli and Tonacacacíhuatl, a dual couple that make up the Onetéotl entity. These main gods were mainly in charge of crops, they were the ones who provided food for mankind. The former inhabited the heavens, was the lord of nature and his wife, the goddess of sustenance; both created the world.

From them are born the next 4 gods, the main creators who would be Mixcoatl, Tezcatlipoca, Quetzalcoatl and Huitzilopochtli. These were the immortal gods, and from them would be born the demigods or half-men. These were the immortal gods, and from them would be born the demigods or half-men.

The best known representation of Mixcoatl, the god of hunters, is of a man with bands, a large crown of feathers and weapons in his hands. We continue with Tezcatlipoca, the god of the night, one of the most magical gods, but also one of the most feared.

Another of the best known gods even outside of Mexican borders is Quetzalcoatl, also known as the Feathered Serpent. It has been represented in a multitude of temples, entire cities and monuments. It is the representation of good and evil, it is also said to be the duality between the weaker human part and the feathers would be the more powerful part of oneself.

Nor can we forget the god Huitzilopochtli, the god of war, the sun and sacrifices. One of the maximum representatives of the Mexica. He is elevated to the category of true gods and not demigods.
