What to see in Riviera Maya

What to see in Riviera Maya One of the most popular plans for those who land in Riviera Maya are the excursions to cenotes, either on your own, with a previously contracted tour or by going to an ecotourism park where you can find several cenotes.

What does cenote mean

For those who have not yet seen a cenote with their own eyes or have never heard of them, we bring you a brief but complete definition of a cenote. These are typical of the Yucatan Peninsula, whose meaning in Mayan language ( dz’onot) means cavern with water.

Normally their waters tend to have pleasant and warm temperatures, some are very deep and others not so deep, depending on their age. In total you will find 4 types of cenotes: cavern, semi-open, open and ancient. The former are the youngest and the latter are the oldest.

The best cenotes in Riviera Maya

The Zací cenote is of the open type, one of the largest that can be found in the Yucatan Peninsula. It has a depth of 30 meters, even more depending on the area where you are.

Another of the most popular cenotes is Cenote Ik Kil, which is located in a park near Tulum and very close to the ruins of Chichen Itza.

We also have the Suytun cenote, one of the most popular open cenotes in the territory, located in a cattle ranch where it is advisable to spend a few days practicing ecotourism.

We continue with the Gran Cenote, great to practice the typical activities: diving, snorkeling, diving and much more. Its crystalline waters will make you fall in love, as well as its characteristic fauna and flora. Make the most of your day by also going to Cenote Azul, very close to this and Playa del Carmen.

We finish with the Dos Ojos Cenote, one of the most characteristic and peculiar that there is. It is considered special because of its two entrances, one for divers and one for bathers. It is inside an enclosed area where you can visit one or two more cenote.
