The archaeological site of Coba

After many years, it has been proven that the name of the city is the original and means ”choppy water”, referring to the nearby lagoons. In particular, it was the 5 lakes in the surrounding area that allowed the inhabitants of the city to progress.

The Coba site was built between 300 and 600 AD. It has approximately 70 square kilometers, composed of buildings connected by sacbes or white roads. There are also a multitude of stelae, stones with engravings of important stories that took place in the city over the years and that have remained for posterity.

The city can be visited every day of the year from 9:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m., although the last access is two hours after closing time. The entrance fee is approximately 80 pesos.

The pyramid of Coba

The most important pyramid is Nohoch Mul, 42 meters high. It is also known by the name of La iglesia. It is currently one of the largest in the entire Yucatan Peninsula, and its name means ”great mound” in the Mayan language.

In order to climb it, it is necessary to walk its 79 stone steps, which lead to a temple dedicated to the Descending God. This pyramid was created to celebrate religious rites and ceremonies, since religion was very important in Mayan society.

The pyramid of Tulum

The ruins of Tulum are among the most visited for their cultural importance, and are composed of buildings worth seeing at least once in a lifetime. Although their constructions are not pyramids as such, they are known as pyramids.

Arguably, the three most characteristic temples are that of the initial series, the Wind God and the Descending God. The entire site is less than 160 kilometers (about 2 hours by car) from the best hotels in Cancun, a perfect tourist destination to rest after a long day of sightseeing.
