Bacalar’s secrets

Houses in Bacalar

The best plans and tours are waiting for you in Bacalar, a magical town in Mexico. Are you ready for your next adventure?

Bacalar in Quintana Roo

The origins of the territory date back to 415 A.D. with the arrival of the Itzáes in the territory. Later, after years of upheaval, Bacalar was founded with the arrival of the Spaniards.

One of the best known events in the territory was the period dominated by piracy, specifically in the 17th century. During those years the place was constantly attacked by bandits until about a century later.

After that long period of uncertainty and horror, it was decided to fortify the city with the so-called fort of San Felipe, a building that undoubtedly brought prosperity to the place. The city earned this distinction in 2007, the year in which it was also named a magical town of Mexico.

How far is Bacalar from Cancun?

If you want to get to Bacalar from Cancun or vice versa, you will have to travel the more than 340 kilometers that exist between one territory and the other, more or less 4 hours. You have different possibilities, either by public transportation such as buses or by your own car.

For those who still do not have lodging in the city, the hotels in Cancun of the Oasis chain will offer you the best comfort and the best services. Its official website offers different discounts that are applied at different times of the year.

Bacalar Lagoon

Other people may know it for the seven-color lagoon, but one way or another, its beauty will be what you remember it for forever. The lake acquires different shades due to the varying depths, an optical effect worth photographing.

The activities are fun and suitable for all members of the family. From sunbathing on the beach, playing in the sand or enjoying the relaxation of a place still unknown to many.

For those who are more adventurous, snorkeling is within everyone’s reach just by having the right equipment and the desire to dive non-stop. Another very nice tour is the one that goes around the lagoon while specialized guides tell you its history in depth.

It may be the best known cenote in all of Bacalar and also the largest. It has a total depth of 90 meters and a length of 360 meters, perfect for diving enthusiasts. You can also go kayaking, which can be rented around the lagoon.

To access it, you must purchase a ticket in advance for an approximate cost of 120 Mexican pesos; the hours are from 8:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. every day of the year.

The black cenote

Here you can dive, but be careful for those with vertigo: the water will turn black quickly due to the change in depth. It is not suitable for everyone, but adrenaline lovers will surely want to overcome the challenge.
