The ruins of Tulum

Sunset Tulum Ruins

Wondering what to do in Tulum during your summer vacation? Read the following lines to discover one of the most important tourist destinations to visit in this region.

Tulum archaeological ruins

  • The castle
  • House of columns
  • Cenote house

It is located in Quintana Roo, in front of the privileged Caribbean Sea. The interior can be accessed through 5 different entrances. Its name means ”wall”, referring to one of its most important constructions.

The Castle, the best known and most visited of the ruins. It is 12 meters high, and although it is not as high as other constructions of this ancient civilization, it is very emblematic due to its location and its significance.

It also served as a lighthouse for sailors who sailed the seas and wanted to return home. It also functioned as a center of worship, something that has been proven over the years thanks to the religious paintings that adorn it.

The building of the house of the columns has a rectangular structure in which are still preserved in fairly good condition several of the columns that held it, hence the name of the same.

When you arrive at the cenote house you can swim in it (if it hasn’t rained) and discover curiosities about it. It is believed that in the past they were used as tombs, as the ancient Maya believed that they were doorways to other worlds.

Tulum Ruins: timetables

If you want to enjoy this spectacular archaeological site, you can do so every day of the year from Monday to Sunday from 9:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m., although the last access is an hour and a half earlier.

Tulum Ruins: prices

The entrance fee is 80 pesos to see almost all of the buildings (some are closed for maintenance or due to Covid’s exceptional situation).

The pyramids of Tulum

  • Temple of the initial series
  • Temple of the God of Wind
  • Temple of the Descending God

Another place to visit in the Mayan ruins of Tulum is the Temple of the initial series, very close to the castle. It is one of the smallest buildings, with only one room.

To represent the Descending God, the temple was created in his name. Its construction can be differentiated from the rest by the drawing of an entity falling from the sky, which is located at its entrance.

The temple of the God of the wind has a more characteristic shape than usual with a circular base, as opposed to what was usually built at that time. There is also one of the altars that were used to make offerings to the gods.
