New Environmental Tax for All Hotel Guests in Cancun

As a government provision published on the Official Newspaper of the State of Quintana Roo on December 20th, 2018, a new environmental tax was implemented in articles 147, 148, 149, and 150 of the Taxpayer Law of the Municipality of Benito Juárez (Cancun) in the State of Quintana Roo. This new tax became effective as of March 1st, 2019, establishing that:

“Any user or users of rooms and/or bedrooms in hotels, inns, guest houses, hostels, and motels, are obliged to pay an environmental cleansing fee, which shall be collected by the industry service provider”.

The amount of this tax will be $25.34 MXN, which is equivalent to 30% of the UMA (Measure & Update Unit), applicable per room and/or bedroom, per night of occupation, and shall be collected for the whole stay, at the time the guest checks in at the hotel.

Provided this is a recently approved tax, it is not included in the rate of the All-Inclusive room. Once the payment is applied, the guest will be provided with a printed voucher.

The income generated from this tax will be used towards sanitation and environmental protection initiatives such as: waste collection, cleansing of beaches, reef conservation, treatment of wetlands, and reforestation, among many others.

In Oasis Hotels & Resorts we want to thank you for your preference and empathy regarding this new government regulation.
