Black Friday opens the Christmas shopping season, with large sales in stores and services. As a complement to this holiday, there is also Cyber Monday; a day dedicated solely to online shopping.
The term Black Friday originated in Philadelphia in the 1960’s, and was used to describe the huge amount of people that crowded the city streets the day after Thanksgiving, which is celebrated on the fourth Thursday of November.
The use of this expression began among the police officers in charge of regulating the traffic of the city streets and became popular nationwide as of 1975. Years later, an alternative explanation for the name of this date arose, since businesses changed their accounts from red numbers to black ones due to the surplus and the increase in sales.
This date has been marked as the day of greatest commercial movement since the year 2005 in the United States, and due to its success many European and Latin American countries have adopted this tradition.
