Playa del Carmenarton5113

Only an hour’s drive from Cancun is the city of Playa del Carmen, here you will find fantastic international restaurants, great shopping opportunities and nightlife to rival Cancun’s; all a stone’s throw from the beach. Dotted nearby are several cenotes; natures swimming pools. Some are free to visit while larger ones charge a nominal fee for upkeep.

Tulum10620605_1165276866858060_2330948803775984950_n

Only 20 minutes by car from the Grand Oasis Tulum is the walled city of Tulum, perhaps the most picturesque Mayan archaeological site. Built on a clifftop overlooking the Caribbean Sea, the ruins which date back to 1200 AD include the remains of a castle, temples and palaces. Don’t forget to bring swimwear as taking to the turquoise waters below and looking up at the ruins is a magical experience.

Isla Mujeres isla-mujeres

If Cancun is all about partying then Isla Mujeres is all about relaxing. This island about a 30 minute boat ride from Cancun’s hotel zone is the perfect place to get away from all the hustle and bustle of city life. Pristine beaches, pretty, colourful streets and an all-round relaxed vibe is the order of the day on Isla Mujeres.

Chichen Itza mapping1

About two hours from Cancun by car is the Mayan archaeological site Chichen Itza, one of the ‘New 7 Wonders of the World’. Apart from its most iconic building, the temple of Kulkulcan, this site which dates back to 600 AD also includes cenotes and pelota (Mesoamerican ball game) pitch. Immerse yourself in thousands of years of history and learn some fascinating facts about one of the great ancient civilizations.

Isla Holboxdescarga

A two hour car journey north of Cancun is the village of Chiquilá where you can take a 20 minute ferry ride to the unspoilt island of Holbox. This fishermen’s island is home to thousands of flamingos, pelicans and other exotic birds and creatures, including whale sharks that from June to September migrate to its waters. Visitors can take a tour to swim with these harmless creatures; some excursions include a spot of fishing where the onboard chef will cook the catch of the day.
