The municipality of Huichapan

Huichapan in the state of Hidalgo

The town is located in the state of Hidalgo and borders Alfajayucan, Nopala, Chapantongo and the state of Queretaro (have you read our article on tours in Queretaro yet?).

The Pueblo Mágico of Huichapan

This beautiful place has been one of Mexico’s characteristic Pueblos Mágicos, or “Magical Towns”, since 2012. Huichapan has many colonial buildings, cobblestone streets and mansions built with wood and iron that will take you back to another era.

In the Nahuatl language, its name means “river of the willows”. Thanks to the Toltecs, it was also given the name Hueychapan, which translates as “abundance of water”.

In the historic center of town you will find the Central Garden, a wonderful park for strolling and spending time with friends or family. It is home to the statue of General Julian Villagran, a hero of Mexican independence.

You will also come across the Municipal Palace, built in 1889 and designed by the architect Guadalupe Magos Rico. Inside the building is the tourist office, perfect for anyone who wants to get information and explore every hidden corner of the town.

Likewise, don’t miss the chapel of Our Lord of Calvary. Inside, there is a carved wooden Christ from the 18th century.

As for cultural tourism, we have to mention the famous El Chapitel building, now a museum that displays objects from the period. It was a key site in Mexican independence. You will also want to visit the Huichapan Museum of Archaeology and History, where you will see pre-Hispanic pieces and learn about the history of the area.

And we can’t leave out the cave paintings, created by ancient pre-Hispanic cultures. They show combat scenes, among other drawings.

Another much-loved spot in the area is El Saucillo, famous for its aqueduct. Its construction began in 1732 and was not completed until 1738, and many experts consider it one of the tallest aqueducts in Latin America.
