Do you already know Laguna Bacalar?
If you are visiting the Yucatan Peninsula, you cannot miss this amazing place located in Quintana Roo. You’ll have to visit before your vacation in Mexico is over. We assure you that it will be worth it.
What to do in Bacalar
In this small coastal town located in the state of Quintana Roo, you can take wonderful pictures, get to know the land and learn about the history of the territory.
Previously this small place was founded by Mayan Itzaes and later, the Spanish conquistadors arrived. During their settlement, they suffered pirate attacks, and decided to build the fort of San Felipe for protection.
Also contemplate the big letters of ”Bacalar”, and complete your great collection of images of the different cities of the country. Large signs at different tourist spots in the country are quite common.
Head to Mahahual beach to spend a whole day enjoying the sea and relaxing under the sun. Walk through the city center and admire the low houses that are still standing, with nice colors that make them very representative.
Meet the Lagoon of the 7 colors
The main attraction is the Lagoon, also known as Laguna Arco Iris (Rainbow Lagoon). It is surrounded by mangroves, jungle and vegetation, and can be crossed by canoe. As we have told you one line above, there is also the ”pirates’ channel”, the place from where the bandits attacked. It is currently visited by a large number of tourists.
Almost 50 kilometers long, the Bacalar Lagoon will fascinate you. To make the most of your visit, we recommend that you rent a sailing boat, kayak, or an excursion with an expert guide and boat to discover all the hidden wonders.
Bacalar Cenote
In Bacalar you can find several of these natural creations, such as the circular Cenote Azul. It is considered the most beautiful of Bacalar, perfect for diving and swimming.
Black Cenote in Bacalar
The black cenote is the deepest, with approximately 90 meters. It is crescent-shaped.
Esmeralda Cenote
It is also a lookout point, and like the others, it is perfect for diving enthusiasts. You will be delighted to discover its waters.
Cocalitos Cenote
Another of Bacalar’s cenotes, also called Santuario de los estromatolitos (Sanctuary of the stromatolites). This is due to the different stratified structures. There are some swings submerged in the waters of the sea to have a great time.
