If you loved the Xoximilco Cancun party and are eager to discover the neighborhood in the south of Mexico City that inspires it and is one of the last remaining remnants of an ancient Aztec water transportation system, join us in these lines.
Delegation of Xochimilco
It is one of the 16 delegations that are part of Mexico City, famous among other things for the trajineras and the sale of flowers, besides being Cultural Heritage of Humanity by UNESCO since 1987. If you are wondering where its name comes from, you should know that it comes from the Nahuatl language and means the sowing of flowers.
Trajineras of Xochimilco
The trajinera rides are very famous and have been held since 1930, in which tourists from all over the world travel along 184 kilometers of canals. The three busiest or most traditional piers are Las Flores Nativitas, Zacapa and Nativitas, where you will find multiple services to learn about the history of the place, buy souvenirs or eat typical dishes.
On the other hand, you can also visit the piers of the protected natural area Fernando Celaca, Cuemanco or Puente de Urrutia, a different walk where you can learn about the fauna and flora of the area. Although we have not mentioned all the existing ports, we encourage you to investigate to discover them all.
As we mentioned above, Cancun celebrates one of the festivals in honor of the trajineras and the culture of Xochimilco. If you have not yet enjoyed it, we recommend you to stay in the most spectacular hotels in Cancun where you can enjoy good services and a unique vacation to know this celebration. One of the most popular resorts is the hotel The at Grand Cancun, its pyramidal shape will enchant you.
Xochimilco Flower Market
Another reason why Xochimilco is well known is because of the sale of flowers in five specialized markets: Madreselva, Acuezcomatl, Palacio de la Flor, Cuemanco or Patrimonio Cultural de la Humanidad.
In all of them you will be able to acquire the necessary tools to take care of your garden, plants or flowers, as well as seeds or fruit trees to make your home a real forest. This is only a small part of Xochimilco, as it is composed of 14 towns and 17 original neighborhoods. One of the oldest neighborhoods in the center is Santa Cruz Analco or also known as Santa Crucita. In the center of the city there are 5 Aztec temples and very important historical monuments.
The chinampas
The importance of the Chinampas lies in the fact that they are handmade intensive production plots that carry assets XIV to XVI. A variety of crops are grown here, including chard, radishes, celery, lettuce and many other varieties. They are currently considered World Heritage Sites.
The Island of the Dolls in Xochimilco
Surely you have seen on the internet some quite unique photographs of the Island of the Dolls, although you may not know that it is located in this delegation and much less what its history is.
The legend tells of the tragic death of a young woman who drowned, her body being found on the banks of the chinampas. The man who found her believed that the girl’s spirit was trapped in the place, and to keep her away, he placed dolls in the place.
