Cozumel, the must-visit island in Mexico

Cozumel Island

If you are planning a vacation in Mexico, one of the destinations you will undoubtedly mark in your agenda is the island of Cozumel; this is integrated in the islands of Quintana Roo, a state of the Riviera Maya strip. Our island is one of the largest and most populated in Mexico, with an area of 500 km2. Apart from its density and size, it is one of the most internationally known territories due to its amazing reef.

How to get to Cozumel Island?

There are different options to go from Cancun. If you have stayed at one of the hotels on the coast, such as the Grand Oasis Cancun hotel, travel to Playa del Carmen and then book a place on one of the ferries that go there. To get to Playa del Carmen we recommend taking a cab, uber, bus or a rented car.

Cozumel Island

If you only like the sea for swimming and not to cross it by boat, there are also direct flights from Cancun airport; the airline that operates to the island is called Maya Air.

Finally, there is always the option of booking a cruise that calls at the island, something that has become very common and requested over time. Many cruise ship stops have changed their itinerary to include the island of Cozumel.

The reefs of Cozumel

Cozumel Reefs

One of the island’s tourist attractions par excellence is undoubtedly the Cozumel Reefs National Park, where you can marvel at the biodiversity it harbors. As you can imagine, scuba diving is one of the most sought after adventures in Mexico.

In the crystal clear waters of the reef you can find many varieties of fish, corals, sharks, barracudas, etc. Also some endangered species, such as the green turtle. The fame is also given by the oceanographer Jean Jaques Cousteau, who recorded a documentary in 1916.

Tourism in San Miguel

In the most populated area of Cozumel we will find San Miguel, a place to buy typical souvenirs. There you will find all kinds of stores, stores, restaurants, etc. You will also be able to photograph several of the 35 marine-themed graffiti murals, which highlighted pressing environmental issues. It was an initiative of the international marine conservation organization PangeaSeed, carried out by different artists.

Go to punta sur park and the Cozumel museum

Punta Sur is the largest natural reserve that can be found on this beautiful island. To take full advantage of the experience there are several tours available. Among the planned activities are: a kayak tour, snorkeling, eating and hanging out in its different restaurants and bars… Also climb the Celarain lighthouse to take better pictures and have a nice souvenir.

Another of our recommendations is the Cozumel Museum, a building whose construction dates back to the 1930s. Get ready for an educational journey through the history of this territory. With its different interactive rooms you will learn about geography, customs, traditions, ecosystems…and much more.
