Xochimilco

One of the first places we will talk about in this small but amazing list of world heritage sites is Xochimilco.

Xochimilco is part of the Unesco list since 1987 and its name encompasses all its attractiveness, which in the Nahuatl language means ”sown of flowers”.

Upon arrival you will see countless trajineras, boats decorated with special motifs. In them you will walk through the most beautiful landscapes of more than 180 kilometers long. There are many piers where you can start your adventure, such as Puente de Urrutía or Las Flores Nativitas.

Mount Alban

Located just 8 kilometers from the city of Oaxaca, you can find the archaeological site known as Monte Alban. In addition, the site has a museum where you can learn more about its history.

These structures known as the Pyramid and the Palace are those that are part of one of the most important sites of this territory and have been named World Heritage Sites in 1987.

Oaxaca

In addition to the archaeological site of Monte Albán, Oaxaca is home to another World Heritage Site: the prehistoric caves of Yagul and Mitla, located in the heart of the Tlacolula Valley. Thousands of years old archaeological remains have been found there.

Palenque

The Mayan ruins of the city of Palenque have been a UNESCO World Heritage Site since 1981. Located in the state of Chiapas, just 8 kilometers from downtown, these are the work of the ancient Mayan civilization that inhabited the territory.

It is made up of more than 200 sculptures, monuments, buildings, etc. They have an area of approximately 16 kilometers where you will find the famous ball game so popular at the time, among several temples.

Teotihuacan

And finally, the archaeological zone of Teotuhuacán. This was one of the most important pre-Hispanic cities of the time. It has been a UNESCO World Heritage Site since 1987. It is composed of various attractions such as the Citadel, the Temple of the Feathered Serpent or the Road of the Dead, among others.

The main attractions are the pyramids of the Sun and the Moon. The first of them is the largest, with three levels on top of which there was a sanctuary. The second pyramid was the center of religious ceremonies.
