What is the Veracruz Reef?
It is currently considered the largest gulf of Mexico, being a protected natural area since 1992 and since 2014 integrated into the list of protected wetlands under the qualification of ”Wetland of International Importance”.
It is privileged to have been incorporated by the United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization into the Man and the Biosphere (MAB) World Network in 2006.
It has an approximate area of more than 65,000 hectares composed of no less than 28 reefs. These coral reefs are of vital importance because they are a natural barrier against storms or hurricanes, in addition to producing oxygen and absorbing carbon dioxide. There you can find very diverse species of fauna and flora, some of which are even in danger of extinction. What will you be able to see? from seagrasses, mangrove as examples of flora to sea turtles, crabs, among other fauna.
Despite its known positive impact on nature and the culture of Mexican citizens, an expansion of the port of Veracruz is being carried out, endangering the ecosystem of the entire reef network. In contrast, the project would benefit more than 30,000 indirect jobs and more than 6,000 direct jobs.
Other threats to which it has to survive are the use of corals or stones for construction purposes, increasingly intensified fishing, unrestricted mass tourism or the proximity of buildings that have an aggressive impact.
Veracruz Coral Reef System National Park
The SAV is located on the coasts connecting the municipalities of Veracruz, Boca del Río and Alvarado. For as long as it has been known, its integrity has always been in danger, and for this reason programs and projects have been created over the years to protect it.
In general, reefs are divided into four groups: outer, intermediate, inner and fringing reefs, all of them different from each other mainly because of their physical characteristics.
