The construction of the Pyramid of the Sun

Even today, many questions surrounding this monument remain a mystery to experts in the field. The Pyramid of the Sun, one of the most important tourist attractions of the ancient city of Teotihuacan, continues to arouse passions among tourists from all over Mexico and the world, as well as among researchers of ancient civilizations. If you like the subject, another archaeological area that you cannot miss is the site of Calakmul.

For example, there are hardly any reliable historical sources to know the true meaning of the construction of the Pyramid of the Sun. In hundreds of years of exploring the area, archaeologists can affirm that there is almost no data to determine the meaning that the Teotihuacanos may have given to the pyramids.

It is also believed that this imposing 65-meter-high construction may have taken 139 years to build. It was in 1986 when the first approximation of the estimated time to complete the project was launched. Between 12 and 14 thousand people participated in this process, each one specialized in a specific subject. This is a remarkable number for the time and for the magnitude of the building.

It has been reported that at the top of the pyramid there may have been a temple or shrine that would make it even taller than it is today. It is the third largest pyramid of the pre-Hispanic era.

The monument is currently located in the center of the Calzada de los Muertos and has three levels that tourists can tour.

The pyramid of the Moon

It is the second tallest structure in the precinct, also located on the Calzada de los Muertos. It has a height of 42 meters. This pyramid was built on 7 consecutive layers, on whose surfaces ceremonies and sacrifices were performed.

Several tunnels and caves 8 meters deep have been discovered under its structure. Of all the research that has been done at the site, it is believed that only a small percentage has been excavated at present. These recent discoveries are intended to shed more light on the secrets that remain hidden about the ancient city and the construction of its pyramids.

To which culture does the pyramid of the sun and the moon belong?

Both the meaning of Teotihuacán, translated as place of the gods, and both pyramids have been attributed to the Aztec culture. It was one of the most important metropolises of the time, housing up to 200,000 inhabitants. Although they were polytheistic, they had several main gods, such as Tlaloc, god of rain.

The beginning of the end for the city of Teotihuacan began in the 7th century, when a great fire devastated important areas (the real origin of that fire is unknown). This disaster led to the subsequent abandonment of the city.
