The archaeological zone of Teotihuacan was inhabited by more than 100,000 inhabitants, becoming one of the largest pre-Hispanic cities. It is located in an area with great natural resources in Latin America. Its name comes from the Nahuatl language and means ”place where the gods were made” or ”city of the gods”.

History of the city of Teotihuacan
It was the Aztecs who named Teotihuacan, a metropolis that was found in ruins when they arrived. The ancient civilization that built and inhabited this place left no record of the name of the place, hence it has come down to our days with the name given to it by the Mexica.
These societies used the site to develop their lives, but also for religious celebrations and worship. The Aztecs also used Teotihuacan for prayers and sacred rites.
Teotihuacan was the nerve center of a very important Mesoamerican society, and has been the subject of research since the 18th century. It was declared a World Heritage Site by UNESCO in 1987. In Mexico we can find an endless number of places, buildings, parties…etc. which have also been declared world heritage sites. If you want to get away from all the tourism, you can consider visiting the Xoximilco festival. You will not be disappointed.
Tourist attractions of Teotihuacán
The Temple of the Feathered Serpent or Pyramid of the Feathered Serpent is the third largest building in this marvelous city (after the Pyramids of the Sun and the Moon). It is decorated with seven bodies representing this deity. We will also find the road of the dead, which joins the citadel with the pyramid of the Moon for a straight line of several kilometers.
Teotihuacan and its pyramids
The pyramids of the Sun and the Moon are also a fundamental attraction. The largest of these is the pyramid of the Sun, which has three levels and is about 65 meters high. It is believed that it was even higher, since its summit was crowned by a sanctuary.
At 45 meters high, the Pyramid of the Moon is the second largest complex in this particular city. It is believed that religious ceremonies dedicated to the water goddess Chalchiutlicue were held in the upper part.
The museums in Teotihuacan
In this building we can find two important museums, the Museum of Teotihuacan Culture and the Museum of Teotihuacan Murals named ”Beatriz de la Fuente”.
The Museum of Teotihuacan Culture aims to show visitors part of the artistic and cultural creations of this ancient civilization, in addition to providing information about the life of the citizens of Teotihuacan.
The Beatriz de la Fuente Museum, named after the leader of the project whose origin was in the National Institute of Anthropology and History and the Autonomous University of Mexico, aims to showcase the artistic pieces created in the Teotihuacan era.
