Where is the construction dedicated to the god Kukulcan?

This well-known Mayan construction is located in the pre-Hispanic city of Chichén Itzá, considered one of the seven wonders of the modern world.

The temple of Kukulcan

The city of Chichen Itza, where this representative work is built, has been a UNESCO World Heritage Site since 1988. It was built in the 12th century A.D. by the inhabitants of this ancient Mayan city, the Itzaes. It is known that it was created to worship the Mayan god Kukulcan, which means Feathered Serpent.

Located in the middle of the jungle, the pyramid of Kukulcan is not the only characteristic vestige that you can find in Chichen Itza. There is also the ball game court, the sacred cenote, the sculptures dedicated to another god named Chaac, the reliefs, and much more.

The pyramid of Kukulcan

Also known as the pyramid of Kukulcan or El Castillo, it was a name used by the Spaniards during the 16th century. This is because they wanted to give it some resemblance to some of the European constructions.

It has a pyramidal shape with 9 levels or bases. Due to the deity of the Foaming Serpent, it is decorated with themes that resemble snakes, and various architectural motifs quite characteristic of the Mayan culture.

Its base measures about 60 meters, reaches a height of about 28 meters, and is composed of hundreds of steps distributed in its 4 facades.

Phenomena observed at Chichén Itzá

At the beginning of the spring and autumn equinoxes, it can be observed at sunset that two of the pyramid’s facades form amazing shadows caused by the strategic constructions. There are 7 triangles of light whose shadows form a Feathered Serpent. This magical natural spectacle lasts approximately 45 minutes.

During the vernal equinox, the luminous event worth observing can be observed during several sunrises. Two of the facades are illuminated and provoke the play of shadows, while the other two are completely in shadow.

This spectacle shows the great intelligence of the Mayas. They possessed knowledge in geometry, astronomy, mathematics, etc. They managed to capture all the wisdom in the magnificent pyramid of the god Kukulcan and in many of their works.
