The capital of Campeche
Campeche is currently a UNESCO World Heritage Site. It is located in the southeast of the country and west of the Yucatan Peninsula. Its capital is San Francisco de Campeche. It is distinguished for being a walled city with a hexagonal shape.
It was founded by the Spanish in 1540 and was built over a settlement called ”Ah Kim Pech” which means ”place of snakes and ticks”.
Typical in the city are the handicrafts, such as costume jewelry and jewelry or furniture made of wood. Like the city, Campeche’s gastronomy is recognized as an Intangible Cultural Heritage of Humanity.
Enjoy typical dishes such as cochinilla pibil or coconut shrimp. If you love Mexican food, but like fusion, Makitaco is the restaurant to visit.
Bastions and forts in Campeche
As we mentioned, Campeche is a World Heritage City due to the enviable preservation of the architectural vestiges that were built in the past to protect it from pirates in 1704.
You can enter through the Puerta de la tierra, which was the old main access to Campeche, walk through Paso de Ronda, a path that connects to the Baluarte de San Juan and continue to the Baluarte de San Francisco.
Also visit the Baluarte de la Soledad, the largest and oldest of the building, and other bastions such as Santa Rosa or San Carlos, the latter transformed into the city’s museum.
Years after the pirate attacks, the inhabitants of Campeche had to face the possible invasion of the English and the forts of San José and San Miguel were built, flanking the city. Fortunately, such an invasion did not take place.
The candelaria of Campeche
It is located in the south of the state of Campeche and is crossed by the Candelaria River, considered the largest river in the region. Here it is common to practice ecotourism, since Candelaria is located in the middle of the jungle.
In the region there are river resorts and a great variety of animals, such as woodpeckers and manatees.
