What is Xilitla?
This town located in the Huasteca Potosina is one of the most visited of the municipality due to the surrealist creation of the artist Edward James, in addition to other tourist destinations that you can not miss.
The town is also the cradle of Nahua and Teenek traditions, natives who have been living hand in hand with nature, without losing ancient customs while adapting to the modern world. Xilitla is one of the 58 municipalities of San Luis Potosí.
Xilitla: las pozas
The pools, also known as the surrealist garden of the artist Edward James, is one of the most important tourist attractions of the Huasteca potosina. Since 2012, it has been an artistic monument by the National Institute of Fine Arts thanks to its unique creations. Visiting hours are from Monday to Sunday from 9:00 a.m. to 6:00 p.m. with different access prices.
This space was created by the English poet in the mid-twentieth century in one of his Mexican properties. At that time the compound was nothing less than a coffee plantation where there were also spectacular plant species, animals of all kinds and much more.
After a few years, this idyllic paradise suffered a spectacular decline due to an unprecedented frost, which destroyed one world to create a different one. Not even James himself was able to see his work completed, as he died before the work on his surrealist garden was finished.
Among its many elements, the unfinished staircases are among the most unique creations we will see in this space. They are roads that lead nowhere, constructions that have been left in the middle, that give rise to confusion and that, in short, lack functionality.
In addition to the stairs, you can find some outstanding works of the place, such as ”La cabaña de Don Eduardo”, ”La casa de los flamingos”, the ”camino de los 7 pecados capitales” or ”el palacio de bamboo” among other singular constructions.

Xilitla: its garden
The surrealist garden consists of no less than 37 hectares, in which are the ”incomplete” works, the waterfalls, plus an additional garden that will not leave anyone indifferent for its particular beauty.
It is said that it was the orchids and the different plants of the Huasteca Potosina that inspired the creation of this magical natural world.
