In our post about what to do in Cancun we talked among other things about visiting the ruins of Tulum, so this is your perfect opportunity to visit the Cenote Calavera (only 4 kilometers from the archaeological site of Tulum) and learn about its history.

Do you know the origin of its name? It acquires the title of skull because it has three openings that look like two eyes and a mouth, it is the sun’s rays that enter through them and make more evident this association that is reflected in the transparent waters.

If you are an experienced diver, you can get your certificate to dive into the depths of this semi-open cenote several meters deep. Also, since it is not one of the most well known cenotes, you will not find many people.

A ladder is available to access it, although adrenaline lovers can jump directly into it. There is vegetation, fish, crystalline waters…all within a 160-meter circumference where you can have a great time.

Mayan Cemetery

The cenotes were considered by the ancient Maya as sacred doorways leading to other places such as the underworld. In them they celebrated ceremonies and made offerings to the gods, as well as being the resting place of many of their citizens.

In the past, Cenote Calavera was a cemetery where up to 120 human bodies were found in a very good state of preservation thanks to the union of fresh and salt waters of this cenote. Thanks to several investigations, it was determined that the human remains are more than 1,500 years old.
