Information and map of the Yucatan Peninsula

Yucatan is made up of several of Mexico’s most visited cities, such as Merida, several natural creations such as the cenotes, as well as archaeological sites, museums to visit and learn about history and much more.

The name Yucatan comes from the explorations of the European conquerors. The name turned out to be a confusion between the language of the Mayan inhabitants and the non-understanding of the Spaniards.

Previously its name was Mayab, which means ”a few”. The place was the settlement of the Mayas, a place of pilgrimage and growth of different cities, giving rise to the archaeological sites that are preserved in enviable condition.

The main cities of the Yucatan Peninsula are:

  • Mérida
  • Cancún
  • San Francisco de Campeche
  • Ciudad del Carmen
  • Chetumual
  • San Miguel de Cozumel
  • Valladolid
