The Zócalo of Puebla
If you are visiting the city, this is one of those must-see tours in Puebla that you can’t miss. Take a camera, a notebook to write down curiosities and follow us in the following lines to learn more about the most central point of the city of Puebla.
Brief history of the Zócalo of Puebla
Mostly known as the Zócalo, the city’s main square is located in the historic center of Puebla. It was built in 1531, also the year in which the city was founded. It was also known by the name Cuetlaxcuapan, which means place where snakes change their skin. It is believed that it was in 1905 when it began to be called Zócalo.
The square is also part of the area where many of the monuments declared World Heritage Sites by Unesco are located. In the past, specifically between 1531 and 1854, it was a clothing and food market. During this period, it was baptized with the name of tiánguis, which means market in the Nahuatl language.
In addition to hosting this market, it was also an important pillar in the customs of the citizens, since theatrical performances and religious cars were held here on a regular basis.
The square is formed by a crossroads of streets that divide the city. In the different cardinal points are the Cathedral, the portal of the Municipal Palace of Puebla, and the portals of Morelos and Iturbide. This distribution was designed so that the adjoining buildings or that were part of the square were buildings to house the civil and ecclesiastical powers, an imitation of the cities of Spain.
The Fountain of the Zócalo of Puebla
The Fountain of the Zócalo of PueblaThe famous fountain dedicated to San Miguel Arcángel was built in 1773 to supply fresh water to the citizens of Puebla. It was Jose Francisco Rabanillo who ordered its construction and Juan Antonio Santa Maria Inchaúrregui who designed it. The fountain has been moved several times: in 1873 it was dismantled for modernization works until 1996, when it returned to the center of the city. Come to the plaza for a great day out, admire the surroundings, take pictures and get a closer look at the hidden details of this wonderful square in the city of Puebla.
