Nevado de Toluca

Nevado Toluca panoramic

Get away from the constant noise of the city and take one of the most beautiful getaways you can find in Toluca: climb to the top of the Xinantecatl volcano, practice sports nearby, or take a break in the middle of a natural paradise.

Nevado de Toluca Park

Nevado de Toluca Park was declared a National Park in 1936 and later, in 2013, a Flora and Fauna Protection Area. Within the park, it’s common to visit the lagoons, engage in adventure activities, or engage in ecotourism.

One of its greatest attractions is the dormant volcano called Xinantecatl, which in Nahuatl means “naked man.” It is the fourth highest mountain in Mexico, at over 4,600 meters above sea level. It is made up of two types of craters containing lagoons. Their names are Laguna del Sol (the Sun Lagoon) and Laguna de la Luna (the Moon Lagoon), the latter being smaller than the former.

After climbing to the summit to admire the beautiful views, take photographs, or relax, you can continue to make the most of your visit to Nevado de Toluca. The most popular activities are mountaineering and hiking, among others.

Climbing Nevado de Toluca

If you’re inspired to climb to the summit of Nevado de Toluca, we’ll give you a few recommendations to make your experience as satisfying as possible. Although you don’t need to be in top physical shape, regular exercise is recommended to make the climb less challenging. This activity is not recommended for children, pregnant women, and/or the elderly.

Depending on the season in which you decide to embark on your adventure, you’ll need to dress warmly and wear comfortable clothing such as hiking pants, a windbreaker, head and ear protection, and comfortable shoes that support your feet, among other items.

Specialized mountain guides will accompany you on your adventure, ensuring that no member of the group is left behind and explaining interesting facts about the area.

Although you can visit year-round, it is recommended to do this adventure in winter, as everything is covered in snow. Visiting hours are from 8:00 a.m. to 3:00 p.m., every day of the year, except Mondays, when it is closed to the public.

Nevado de Toluca, altitude

The inactive mountain or volcano Nevado de Toluca or Xinantecatl is 4,600 meters high, making it the fourth highest mountain in all of Mexico.

Nevado de Toluca, prices

Prices will vary depending on the plan you choose. If you book a tour with round-trip transportation, food included, or some additional service, the price per person can reach 2,000 Mexican pesos, although you can always find cheaper experiences.

On the other hand, if you go on your own, you’ll have to consider several things. You have to pay for parking and park admission, which will cost approximately 150 pesos, in addition to any gas you spend or any food you bring with you.
