One of the most important buildings in the archaeological zone of Tulum is undoubtedly El Castillo, located in the highest part of the city. In front of this marvelous construction is the Temple of the Initial Series. A little further away you can see the Temple of the Descending God and almost on the other side is the cenote house.

All of the cenote temples have been studied in depth in order to discover more about the customs and life of the ancient inhabitants. Other famous architectural creations are the House of Columns or the Temple of Frescoes.

Zamá: Did you know him?

In ancient times the archaeological city of Tulum was known as Zamá, which in the Mayan language translates as ”dawn” or ”morning”. This was the real name of the city or at least this is the information that has come down to us today thanks to the sources found dating from the sixteenth century.

The city of Tulum, the name by which this ancient Mayan settlement is recognized, is of more recent creation and means ”wall”, referring to the enormous protective construction that can still be seen.
