Get to know the touristic Centote Ik Kil

Ik Kill Cenote

Cenotes are one of Mexico’s great attractions, especially those located in the Yucatan Peninsula. The cenotes were formed thanks to the lowering of the sea level, since millions of years ago the peninsula was submerged under water. If you are a nature lover, you cannot miss this activity.

In addition to Cenote Ik Kil, discover Cenote Dos Ojos, located in the park of the same name in Tulum, Mexico. To make your plan to visit the different cenotes you are interested in traveling to, we recommend you to read the cenotes route. We hope to be of great help during your vacation in Mexico.

About the Cenote Ik Kil and its depth

The meaning of Ik Kil in Mayan is ”the place of the winds” (although it is also known as sacred blue) and it is one of the most popular and touristic cenotes in the Yucatan Peninsula. It is located in a park with trees, different exotic plants and multiple species of birds such as parrots and toucans. There is a 90-step staircase to access the cenote.

The view it offers is incomparable: in the middle of nature, with vines falling from a height of 23 meters, making us believe that they are waterfalls and with a depth of 48 meters. It is believed to have been the epicenter of ceremonies, sacrifices, rites and legends. It was different archaeologists and speleologists who found remains of bones and jewelry in the depths of Ik Kil.

It is usually the last stop after visiting the must-see tour, Chichen Itza. This is because the cenote Ik Kil and the archaeological sites are only three kilometers away. Many tours and excursions include these two tourist attractions, although we recommend visiting them separately to fully appreciate both experiences.
