The magical towns, Cuetzalan

It has been part of the program of magical towns since 2002, among other things, because one of its ancestral dances, associated with fertility, was considered Intangible Cultural Heritage by UNESCO in 2009.

Come and visit this fantastic tourist destination whose meaning is ”near the precious birds called quetzal” in the Nahuatl language. It was founded in 200 B.C. by the Totonacs and it was not until 1547 that it received the name by which it is known today, San Francisco Cuetzalan.

It is perfect for adventure and risk activities, here you will find some that will leave you wanting more. Ziplining allows you to live an adrenaline-filled experience where you slide down a rope and look out over the landscape. You will be surrounded by trees, animals and below you will have the Cuichat River canyon, 30 meters below.

Another of Cuetzalan’s must-see attractions is the archaeological site of Yohualichan. The name comes from the Nahuatl language and means ”house of the night”. This is due to the fact that there are a large number of caves in the area, similar to those found in the site.

There you will find a ceremonial center with several platforms, a ball game (found in many sites in Latin America), among others. It is only 12 kilometers from the magical town and 165 kilometers from the capital of Puebla.

Cuetzalan caves

The first one we will talk about is the Gruta de Los Corales. It consists of about 200 meters of interior caves, rock formations, stalagmites and much more. Thanks to the optical effect of all these formations, its name was born. It is one of the easiest you will find, so it is a good option if you are traveling with your family.

The Chichicazapan cave is one of the most special, because unlike the others, it has its own subway river. It is also known to be one of the most difficult, so it is only recommended for true experts.

The last cave we will tell you about is the Gruta Aventura, although in the past it was known as Oxtimazal Sur. It has a depth of 80 meters and a length of approximately 400 meters. It is medium in terms of difficulty.

Pata de perro, Cuetzalan

Another of the most popular natural attractions is the Pata de Perro (Dog’s Paw), a pool that resembles the footprint of this mammal. There are 5 circles of water in which you can get into without any problem, although it is more common to take pictures of them.

Visiting hours are from Monday to Sunday from 8:00 a.m. to 1:00 p.m., and at 5:00 p.m. the premises are vacated. Its location is Atmolon Ayotzinapan, San Miguel Tzinacapan.
