Reddish waters of the lagartos river

Another of the beautiful locations we can find while visiting Yucatan is the Rio Lagartos Biosphere Reserve, an amazing natural creation that we encourage you to visit.

Yucatan and the Lagartos River

The Lagartos River has been a Biosphere Reserve since 2004, although a few years before this designation, in 1986, the Lagartos River joined the Ramsar Convention, an international agreement that promotes the conservation of wetlands. Its name comes from the shape of its estuaries and the mangrove, the natural habitat of many of the species you can find here.

It is a very popular place for flamingos, where they currently nest and have their young. Flamingo banding can be seen between April and August.

It is also the place chosen by turtles to nest in the months of April to October and how to forget the crocodiles, also visible in the area from January to December.

To take the long awaited boat tour to see the flamingos and crocodiles in the estuary you will have to go to the most touristic town in this area, Rio Lagartos. It is a tour of a few people in which you will be accompanied by a local guide who will tell you in depth.

Flamingos and Lizards River Tour

Another of the most beautiful tours is the one that takes you to the salt flats in the coastal town of Las Coloradas, pink waters that are also full of flamingos. This is a small town of barely a thousand inhabitants that receives tourists thanks to the unique landscapes of its salt flats. The characteristic color of its waters is due to the amount of salt they contain (the more salt, the redder they are).

There are tours to go hiking or kite surfing if you are passionate about the sport. Take this opportunity to do it in a wild area full of magic.

El Cuyo is also a very quiet village thanks to its paradisiacal location and relaxed atmosphere in which to stroll along the beach or do water sports.
