Let the music begin

May is without a doubt one of our favorite months at Oasis Hotels & Resorts: not only do we enjoy unbeatable weather and long sunny days, but the event we most love to host comes to Oasis for a new edition, and this time it arrives loaded with a strong dose of funk that will make it unique.

As every year, the kickoff of this magnificent event takes place at our beloved Crazy Hot Coyote, an entertainment venue that hosts jazz nights every week, where it has become a tradition to open this magnificent festival with the press conference and the performance of Cancun’s jazz master, Hiram Gómez, on Thursday, May 19.

The best of the best.

In this new edition of the festival, the fifth to be held, Oasis Hotels & Resorts has gone further to bring to Cancun, an impressive and unique selection of artists.

After the festival’s opening at CHC, on Friday, May 21, at the Arena Oasis, the Oasis Jazz U 2016 festival formally begins with the presence and music of one of the most important Mexican Latin jazz bands there is: Los Músicos de José will be in charge of opening the night, a band that defines its style and music as instrumental, close to funk, aimed at the feet, the gut and both hemispheres of the brain.

Originally from Mexico City, this band will serve as the opening act for a legend of jazz music, a band that for almost 50 years has forged a unique sound and has influenced a large number of audiences and of course other artists. This is the San Francisco band “Tower of Power”, a legendary group, or as defined by Fernando Toussaint, coordinator of the event: “An iconic group, practically a witch, as we say, that has influenced new generations of musicians, both in Mexico and abroad”.

And for the second weekend.

For our second and stellar weekend, the festival will welcome to the Oasis Arena a band that skillfully blends the power of hip hop with the delight of funk, making their audience dance while simultaneously sending a deeper and more important message. This is Fiusha, a band with more than 16 years of experience and undoubtedly one of the most important jazz bands in Mexico, who will delight us in this new edition of the Oasis Jazz U festival.

A cherry on top for Oasis Jazz U

And to crown the cake with a huge cherry on top, the festival dresses up and unrolls the red carpets, because on Saturday 28th we will receive an incomparable artist, who has won more than ten Grammy Awards and has sold just over 70 million copies around the world during her successful career. We are of course talking about one of the divas of modern music, Chaka Khan. Known as the Queen of Funk, she has been nominated twice for the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame, first as a member of the legendary group Rufus, of which she was a member, and later as a solo artist in 2011. This unforgettable woman will be in charge of astonishing us with her voice and rounding off a festival that continues to attract to this destination, unique artists that enrich not only those of us who participate in Oasis Jazz U, but the city in general, by bringing to the ears of the Cancunenses, artists of international stature that undoubtedly make our city an attraction, not only for its beautiful nature, but also for an important cultural offer that people from other parts of the country and the world can come to enjoy.
